CampingRoger’s Rocky Top Retreat This is the climber’s campground. Located on the southern rim of the gorge at the end of a dead end road, this campground boasts plenty of peace and quiet, if not much level ground. Pick an open spot in the field and put up your tent. The social scene is friendly and relaxed. If you are solo and looking for partners, this is your best bet. Roger is the nicest guy you’ll ever meet and runs the show with low-key good humor. The amenities are minimal but the location is great: walk to popular crags like Kaymoor and Butcher’s Branch. Great running and biking trails leave right out of the campground. Sorry, no phone. Stop at Water Stone for directions. Or ask anyone in Fayetteville how to get to get to Gatewood Rd. and take a left at the Kaymoor #1 sign and follow the road to the end. Sorry no phone. Chestnut Creek Campground A more traditional camping option with individual, woodsy sites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables Located on the north side of the gorge, just off Rt. 19 on Lansing Road, this place is close to Fern Creek, Endless Wall and Beauty Mountain. Nice shower house. Your host, Brian, can be a bit gruff but he is a great guy--just don’t drive too fast or you will for sure hear about it… 304-574-3136 Cooter's Campground A small peaceful, secluded and rustic campground located just off Gatewood Rd. in Fayetteville. 304-574-2772 Ray's Campground Midway between the New and Gauley Rivers. Tent camping, RV sites and cabins. 304-658-4386 Mountain State Outdoor Center. This conveniently located campground is owned and operated by Class VI River Runners. Just off Rt. 19 on Ames Heights Rd., it offers different camping options, a store, and a clean shower house. The only drawback is road noise from Rt. 19. 304-574-0704 Rifrafters Campground Located two miles south of the bridge, this campground is clean, quiet and offers a variety of camping options. They pride themselves on being family friendly. 304-574-1065 Summersville Lake Retreat If you plan on climbing at Summersville most of your visit, you may want to consider staying here, just off Rt. 19 on Rt. 129. Wooded tent sites available. Steve and Donna, your super-friendly, knowledgeable hosts, have a well-run clean campground and loads of local info. They can also rent you a pontoon boat or a sea kayak. 304-872-5975 Most of the raft companies also have campgrounds, but be forewarned, rafters tend to stay up late, drink gallons of cheap beer and make lots of noise. Caveat emptor!! Cabin RentalsOpossum Creek Retreat The cabin business around here is expanding rapidly but no one is doing it better than Geoff who started this business over ten years ago. A variety of well-sited cabins are available, all come with hot tubs and loads of peace and quiet. Premier wedding location in the area. 304- 573-4900 River Rock Retreat and Hostel If you and your family or buddies don’t feel like camping and you don’t need much in the way of fanciness, you will want to check this place out. Comfortable and affordable and well located for climbers, it sleeps up to 14 in beds with lots more floor space. Everything you need and nothing more! Babcock State Park Cabins Babcock is another stellar unit in the amazing West Virginia State Park system. Their cabins are charming--CCC built log cabins on the banks of Glade Creek.
